We are still working on details but in the meantime, mark your calendars for these dates. We will be announcing details for both as they are confirmed. Please remember to bring a face mask.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

JESSE LEE CHURCH and EAST READFIELD CEMETERY MAY (#57)

Friday, May 21st 10 a.m.-12 noon To begin, meet by 10 a.m. at Jesse Lee Church on the corner of Plains Road and Main St. (route 17) in East Readfield. History Walkers will first visit the inside of the Jesse Lee Church while learning more about its history. From there they will walk across Plains Road to visit the graves of some of those early residents who helped build the church, and to place American flags on the graves of Readfield veterans in observance of Memorial Day.

Jesse Lee Meeting House was dedicated in 1795 and is named in honor of the Methodist missionary who had traveled from Virginia by horseback into this back country two years prior. As Lee preached at the cabin of Nathaniel Whittier in 1793, to Whittier and several other early settlers, he suggested they build a meeting house and the settlers immediately set their hands and hearts to doing so. They built it on the 5 acre "Bowdoin Lot" that had been set aside in the 1791 town plan/survey, for the addition of a house of worship, a school and a militia ground was also located on the Bowdoin Lot. Today, Jesse Lee is the oldest Methodist Church in New England, to have remained in continuous use as a house of worship.

Meet at Jesse Lee Church on the corner of Plains Road and Main St (route 17) by 10 a.m. Walking is on level ground or slight incline in some places, with stops along the way, for about half a mile. In case of rain, postponement will be announced by 8 a.m. on the Readfield Historical Society Facebook page; on this website; and via email for those who are on our email list. To be added to that list send your request to crossings4u@gmail.com.

THE 1921 FIRE AT READFIELD CORNER (#58)

Friday, June 11th 10 a.m.-12 noon On June 11, 1921 a devastating fire destroyed nearly every building at Readfield Corner. Dale Potter-Clark and Bill Adams will co-lead this walk, sharing photos and pointing out the locations that were impacted. They will also share some stories about that fateful day including the home and businesses that were lost. The Masonic Block was an important presence in town then as it is today and the Masons began rebuilding two short months after the fire which inspired others to do the same. The Masonic Hall will be open for those who wish to see it, at the culmination of the Walk and a historic site marker will be dedicated in remembrance of that day 100 years ago. Meet in the parking lot behind the Masonic Block (U.S. Post Office) by 10 a.m. We will be walking from there around the center of town - all walking is on level ground or slight incline in some places, with stops along the way, for about half a mile. In case of rain, the postponement of this walk will be made by 8:00 a.m. on this page; on the Readfield Historical Society facebook page and via email for those who are on our email list (to be added to the email list send a request to crossings4u@gmail.com)

Watch for future announcements about these History Walks on this web site, in local media outlets, and on the Readfield Historical Society facebook page. Dale Potter-Clark will share what she has learned about the Poor Farm in writing her latest book about Readfield's poor farms and paupers of long ago including some of the photos she unearthed in the process; and Bill Adams will have morsels to share about other farms in the area that he has been researching. Quimby Bog, once named "Dudley Bog", extends from Readfield Depot Village to Rat Mill Hill Road in East Mt. Vernon (near Dunn's Corner). It was named after Dr. Samuel Quimby of Mt. Vernon who once owned a mill on the stream at the north end of the bog, Essentially, North Road in Readfield runs parallel to the bog although never within sight of it. Near the southern end there used to be a gravel pit not so long ago (makes sense, since an esker is made of gravel). Also, about 1930 the Readfield dump was established near the SW side of the bog, over an aquifer. April 26, 2019

Readfield's first poor farm (of three) was established on Walker Road in 1859. Four family farms had been built in this neighborhood years before that. Included among them was this poor farm built by Stephen Bean in 1823 and sold to the town of Readfield in 1859.

This area was originally settled by Joshua & Elizabeth (Longfellow) Johnson (circa 1790), who sold their homestead to their daughter and husband Elias & Nancy (Johnson) Gove in 1800. One of their nine children was Elias Gove Jr, "Immanuel Prince of Peace".
The second family to settle on Walker Road was Thaddeus & Mary (Sanborn) Richardson in 1802. In 1815 they sold 45 of their 100 acres to their son Asa & wife Sarah (Cottle). They built a farm adjacent to his parents and raised 13 children there - one was Mary Jane Richardson.

None of those original farm buildings remain in this neighborhood. When road names were changed or made permanent, during the development of the E911 system, this road was renamed Walker Road. Previously it had been known as the Hawes and the Lewis Road.

This walk will last from 10a.m. - 12:00noon. We will walk and talk along the road and not on rough ground, although part of the road is on a slight upgrade.
DIRECTIONS: From Main St. Readfield Corner (blinking traffic light) take Church Road north to Fogg Road. Walker Road is off Fogg Road. There will be someone there to show you where to park a short ways up Walker Road. We are starting to plan history walks for 2019 - dates have not yet been set. These walks are presently under consideration:

1. Readfield Town Forest, where the third and last town poor farm was located;

2. "Hawes Road" (now Walker Rd) where the first town poor farm was located;

3. The Esker Trail along Quimby Bog - more history occurred in this part of town than you might think!

4. East Readfield "Dudley Plains" and Cemetery

Do you have ideas or requests for 2019 walks? We will consider re-visiting places that have already been covered since we began these walks in Oct. 2012. See the list / summaries of those elsewhere on this web site. W Corner has been dubbed that by Readfield historian Dale Potter-Clark because in the earliest days of Readfield's history the Waugh, Whittier, White and Wyman families all lived there or in close proximity. The 1791 town meeting, when Readfield voted to separate from Winthrop was also held at one of the "W" farms. The Townsend Farm, Beaver Brook Tourist Home and Sir Charles Hotel (later known as Tallwood) were also in this neighborhood. Our guest host this time will be Bill Rourke, who resides on "W Corner" and has lived there for most of his life, as did his parents and grandparents. During his lifetime he has lived in Tallwood Farm, the Whittier homestead and Beaver Brook Farm. We will meet by 10am in the yard by Bill Rourke's barn off South Road. In those days the railroad depot was still present and trains, carrying passengers and cargo, stopped several times a day. There were stores, a post office, granary, taverns, blacksmiths, livery, sawmill, tenement house, school, church, several homes and more. Still later there was car dealership and garage in the center of the village. Vintage photos will be shown, stories shared - do feel welcome to come and share your own stories about Readfield Depot!

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Readfield was settled years ahead of the War of Independence and before the US Constitution assured religious freedom. In those days the Congregational Church and Puritan lifestyle still prevailed. It was not long, however, before Baptist, Methodist and other evangelists and missionaries came into this backcountry and converted many of our fair residents. Still later the Universalists appeared. Early Readfield became a hot bed of free thinkers, movers and shakers. Dale will share information about the coming of early religions in Readfield which was on the missionary circuit in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Methodists, Baptists, Universalists and even the Shakers impacted Readfield in its earliest days.

When and how did Kents Hill village change from remote backcountry
farmland to a cultural and educational center? Before 1775 there were very few
people living on Kent’s Hill – the Packards and Kents were two of the first to
stake their claims and buildings began to appear. The Packard men were
housewrights so they built many of them. After the Revolutionary War others
came – the most influential, who had a long lasting effect, was Luther Sampson.
From 1790 until 1824 a meeting house and parsonage, grammar school, store,
cemetery and Methodist Seminary were established and the hilltop called Kent’s
Hill evolved from a handful of family farms to a thriving cultural and
educational center. In this class you will learn about that evolution, hear
more about the buildings and houses, and some of the people who lived in Kents
Hill village.
Soon after the first shot was fired at Lexington, exactly
243 years ago, nineteen men from Winthrop, ages 14 to 46, picked up arms and marched off to
fight for independence. Some had also
fought in the French & Indian War. Several of them were living in

(1850). Over the years more than ninety
Patriots lived in Readfield and many are buried here. In this presentation you will

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">Saunders Manufacturing was founded in East Winthrop by Harry (A.H.) Saunders, his wife Edith and son Joe in 1947. A year later they bought a farm at 65 Nickerson Hill Road, from Harry's mother Sarah, and moved themselves and the business there. Over the years the business grew, as did their land holdings.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">Research reveals that members of the Saunders family has a rich heritage in manufacturing and some have even had a hand in helping to build some internationally famous historic landmarks. Attend this History Walk to learn more.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Camp Kirkwold has been a Girl Scout camp since 1952. It was founded as
Camp Abenaki in 1919 by Dr. Emma Greene Wood, an osteopathic physician from New
Jersey. She sold it to Marjorie Kirk of New York in 1927, who renamed it
Camp Merrywold, meaning "happy world". She managed to keep it
operating through the Great Depression era but when WWII and gas
rationing struck she had to close the doors. After ten years of trying to sell
it she eventually donated it to the Girl Scouts of Maine in 1952. The Girl
Scout Council renamed it Kirkwold in Marjorie Kirk's honor. The caretaker,
Berndt Graf, has agreed to open the gate for us so we can drive in as far as
their parking lot, which is marked and obvious as you enter the campground.
Gather at the parking lot by 10am and we will walk further into the grounds
from there. Mr. Graf will have some photos and other historical memorabilia on
display for us and will be available for answering questions about Kirkwold
that we may have. Dale Potter-Clark will read from the chapter about the history of Kirkwold from her book "The Evolution of Summer Resorts and Kids' Camps on Four Lakes in Central Maine". You will enjoy seeing the historic lodge and some of the
other buildings on “campus”. I hope you will be able to join us – this is a
rare opportunity to see Kirkwold – and I bet some of you, or your daughters,
attended Kirkwold as Girl Scouts and would enjoy seeing it again?
